自慢じゃないけど、ぼくも「断る」の苦手な人間だった。
たぶん、「むつかしい人」に思われたくない
という心理が、働いていたんだろうな。
そういう気持ちは、いまでももちろんあるんだよね。
でも、少なくとも、
「断る」ということについて、
昔よりもいっぱい考えてきたという気はするな。
「断る」ことができないばかりに、
積み重なっていく迷惑というものが、
借金のようにふくらんでいくものなんだ。
その迷惑というのは、他人にも自分にもかけるものだ。

『モノポリー』というボードゲームをやっているときに、
「断る」についての、ひとつの考え方を発見した。

＜断る側は、その理由を言えないままで
　断ってもいいんだよ＞
　
というものだったんだ。
それは、ゲーム上のことなので、
法則化しやすかったのかもしれないけれど、
この考え方を見つけたときには、
この先の人生がずいぶん楽になるんじゃないか、
とさえ思ったものだったよ。
